In-game cataclysmic events can radically shift fortunes as the game progresses, disrupting the best laid plans and providing opportunities for cunning players to gain an advantage. This new expansion sees the dawn of the Eternal Lords. New mechanics such as the Race Governance system, which allows players to tailor the features of each race in their empire to meet their strategic needs, add new layers of depth to empire development and diplomacy. Eternal Lords introduces the Tigran and Frostling races and the new Necromancer class.

IMO this series is better than HOMM (even 3) and I'd fight anyone on that.Eternal Lords is the second expansion for Age of Wonders III, marking one year of continuous development since its release.
Pretty different from modern AoW but many prefer it, its an incredible game as well. AoW2:Shadow Magic is an incredible classic game as well, if people haven't played it. Really a metric shit-ton of solid game content in these. I was NOT expecting another game in the series, they sell pretty badly for how good the games are. This looks like a fusion of what they learned in Planetfall and applying it to the Fantasy version, which is just grand. For my money AoW3+Xpacs is the best in the genre, with AoW:Planetfall being probably even better (the game after AoW3) though I like high fantasy as a genre more than SciFi. They are definitely not as high budget games as something like Civ or Total War but they do a lot with it. The maps are gorgeous and multiplayer is implemented flawlessly. The combat AI is actually pretty clever, and the maps themselves have environmental hazards that are impactful. Units have fun and impactful abilities, the race/tech/alignment mix-match stuff lets you make some fun unique faction combos. Definitely more of a war-game than something like Civ or Endless Legends but its tactical map is great. IMO the single most underappreciated series in the 4X genre.
